School Visits to New Orleans Area Schools
The Alliance is pleased to offer the opportunity for attendees to visit 3 schools in the New Orleans area on Monday June 23rd or Tuesday June 24th.  The following is each school's information and instructions on how to reserve a seat on the shuttle. 

School visit information:
All school visits will take place on Monday June 23rd or Tuesday June 24th

  • Complimentary shuttles to Samuel J. Green Charter School; Martin Luther King Charter School; and Andrew Wilson Charter School.
  • Shuttle space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Attendees planning on visiting a school are asked to RESERVE A SEAT on the shuttle.  To do so, please email at natlcharterconf@continue.uoregon.edu or 800-280-6218. BE SURE to mention what school you want to visit in your email!
  • Complimentary shuttles will leave from the Morial Convention Center (Hall A entrance) and will drop attendees off at the Convention Center after the visit.  

SCHOOLS
Dr. Martin Luther King Charter School
DATE: Monday June 23 2008

Shuttle departure: 8am; Shuttle returns: noon

School description: The school was the first to re-open in the Lower 9th Ward after Hurricane Katrina.  Its mission is to create and maintain an orderly, trusting environment where teaching and learning are innovative and exciting; where students are taught to read, write, compute, and think critically according to their fullest potential.  The school visit will begin with a tour of the Lower 9th Ward.  After, attendees will visit the school, and have an opportunity for question and answers.

Andrew Wilson Charter School
DATE: Monday June 23 2008

Shuttle departure: 8am; Shuttle returns: noon

School description: The school aims to rebuild the Broadmoor neighborhood, hit hard by Katrina, with a world-class school at its center.  Andrew Wilson Charter School focuses on student achievement and its highly qualified teachers offer students a comprehensive curriculum that includes the arts, music, and physical education.  In a joint venture with the Broadmoor Charter School Board, the school is committed to its students and the neighborhood it serves.

Samuel J. Green Charter School - Edible School Yard Project
DATE: Tuesday June 24 2008

Shuttle departure: 8am, Shuttle returns: noon

School description: The mission of Edible Schoolyard New Orleans (ESY NOLA) is to create and sustain an expansive organic garden on the public school campus of Samuel J. Green Charter School in New Orleans. The Edible Schoolyard is integrating organic gardening and fresh seasonal cooking into the school's curriculum, culture and food programs. It involves students in all aspects of farming the garden-along with preparing, serving and eating the food-as a means of awakening their senses and encouraging awareness and appreciation of the transformative values of nourishment, community, and stewardship of the land.  After the tour, attendees will have an opportunity for question and answers.
